THE BENEFITS: 1. High resistance to wear. 2. Excellent scuffing and seizure resistance. 3. Fatigue properties improved by up to 120%. 4. Considerably improved corrosion resistance. 5. Good surface finish. 6. Negligible shape distortion. 7. Predictable growth characteristics. 8. Alloy substitution - Plain carbon steels replacing low alloy steels.
These characteristics, alone or in combination, are particularly beneficial for automotive, textile, pump and tooling components. A wide variety of wrought, cast and sintered materials are suitable for treatment after finish machining, including plain carbon steels, cast irons, nitriding steels, and hot work tool steels.
Components of up to 30" diameter and 48" long can be accommodated.
FERRITIC AND AUSTENITIC PROCESSES
Bodycote Thermal Processing provide a comprehensive range of nitrocarburizing treatments, encompassing the ferritic and austenitic processes. Whilst Ferritic Nitrocarburizing is the more generally specified process, the greater load bearing capability of the austenitic treatment has resulted in it's adoption as an attractive alternative to the high temperature surface hardening techniques.
Austenitic nitrocarburizing produces a transformation zone of martensite and austenite in addition to the compound layer.Components manufactured from plain carbon steels and processed by Austenitic Nitrocarburizing can have a surface hardness of up to 750 Hv5, whilst retaining most of the property improvements of the ferritic process.
TRIBOLOGICAL BENEFITS
The 'compound layer' produced on the surface of components by Nitrocarburizing imparts very high resistance to sliding wear, scuffing and seizure even in unlubricated conditions, and has corrosion resistance equivalent to a phosphated and oiled finish.
It was discovered during the early development of Nitrocarburizing that subsequent controlled oxidation followed by oiling, further enhances both the aesthetic and corrosion resistance characteristics of processed components.
FATIGUE RESISTANCE
Increased fatigue resistance is contributed by the nitrogen rich case beneath the compound layer. Whilst maintaining a fairly low surface hardness of 300 to 400 Hv5 on mild steel components, the use of low alloy steels can enhance the surface hardness up to 1000 Hv5, as in the case of 905 M 31 (EN 41 A) steel.
FREEDOM FROM DISTORTION
Since it is a relatively low temperature treatment, Nitrocarburizing results in little distortion, which in any event can be eliminated by stress relieving prior to finish machining and treating. During processing slight growth occurs (of the order of 0.0003" per surface), and this must be allowed for prior to treatment. Components must not be ground after Nitrocarburizing, as this will remove the beneficial compound layer. For load-bearing surfaces a light burnish with a fine grade of emery paper is often used to improve the surface finish which tends to roughen slightly during treatment.
Nitrocarburizing is metallurgically equivalent to the older Salt Bath processes known by various trade names, without their undesirable contamination characteristics. Bodycote Thermal Processing operate controlled atmosphere furnaces and fluidised beds especially provided with nitrocarburizing capability.
